Respiratory conditions are diseases that affect lung tissue and its associated structures like nasal and thoracic air passages.
Some of the most common respiratory conditions are sinusitis, asthma, and bronchitis.
We provide treatments for all of these conditions, and may be able to help you with our customized approach to each patient case.
Please read below for more specific information.
Sinuses are air filled openings in the bones of the skull and are a part of the nasal passages, assisting in breathing. Sinusitis is an inflammation of the soft tissue that covers these openings. Usually, the inflammation will cause tissues to produce a discharge that can block the sinus openings. The most common cause is viral or bacterial infection. Sinusitis causes pain and tenderness over affected sinus. It can also produce a headache or a toothache. With blockage, there is difficulty breathing through nose in addition to nasal discharge.
We recommend acupuncture and respiratory massage as a complementary treatment to medications usually prescribed to manage sinusitis.
Acupuncture can help reduce inflammation and stimulate immune system function to help fight off infection.
Respiratory massage treatment includes facial steam and facial massage to stimulate sinus drainage.
Please note, that these treatments are recommended in recovery stage. If you're getting sick and have a fever, please avoid coming in for an appointment to prevent a possible spread of cold or flu.
Bronchi are passageways through which air gets into your lungs.
Bronchitis is an inflammation of soft tissue membranes in these passageways, which result in increased mucous production by the membranes.
Eventually, airways become obstructed causing development of coughing, distressed breathing, and in some cases even infection. This blockage also leads to insufficient oxygen delivery to the lungs, which in turn affects normal functioning of the body.
Chiropractic adjustments on the thoracic spine and ribs aim to increase expansion and contraction of the ribcage. This helps to increase air expiratory flow rates, making breathing more effective.
Acupuncture can help reduce inflammation and stress. Massage treatment is aimed at increasing mucous drainage and relaxing muscles of the thorax for more effective breathing.
Asthma is a condition marked by allergic spasms of the muscles of air passageways. Spasms are spontaneous and usually occur as an allergic reaction. Since constriction of the muscles causes narrowing of the passageways, asthma is marked by a severe difficulty in breathing.
We recommend a therapeutic massage to decrease stress, which reduces levels of stress hormones in the body that often play as mediators of an asthma attack.
Chiropractic treatment is helpful by adjusting the spine and ribs to improve thorax mobility, which improves expiratory volume and increases neural control of the muscles.
Acupuncture can help significantly reduce level of stress and inflammatory response in the body. Whichever treatment you choose, the goal is usually is to decrease the frequency and severity of the attacks, and to increase breathing volume.
